The 1950's
The
first full season
of the 50's, 1950-51 the club finish still lower in the league,
below mid-table. However the team caused a surprise in reaching the in
Lancashire Junior Cup final to Rochdale at Deepdale, Preston. Losing
0-1 to Rochdale in a poor game where Rochdale played mainly 1st team
players. 1951 ~ 1952 saw a much improved Morecambe side
finished fifth, however the team did not win one single cup game.
1952 ~ 1953 was another indifferent season with club ending mid-table
again and no cup success either. The continuing poor
performance went on for the 1953 ~1954 with the team ending third
from bottom, but club played its floodlit games, away, Ashton United
and Rochdale Reserves.
1954~1955
The season began well, the onset of winter the results began
indifferent and the team final end the season in ninth place.
The board appointed the clubs' second manager in Albert
Dainty as player-manager.
The 1956~1956 proved to a poor season and clubs avoided
relegation by beating Prescot Cables 4-2 on the last day of the
season. The following season, 1956~1957 Ken
Horton was
appointed manager. Many supporters say this was the being of the
club's 'Golden Era'. The team finished third, their highest position
for nearly 30 years, playing 7 games in the last 10 days costs them
their title hopes. Lost 2-1 over 2 legs to Horwich in Combination Cup
final, but reach FA. Cup 1st Round , losing 1-4 to Accrington
Stanley, of the Football League, in front of over 9,000 fans, at Peel
Park. Ray Charnley, later to play for England, was sold to 1st
division Blackpool for £1,000. The next season, 1957~1958
the club and supporters had high, however the club crash out of the
F.A. Cup in the 4th qualifying round losing to Prescot Cables 3-0,
and with a poor end of season run in the team finished seventh.
1958~1959
This was a fairly good season the team finished 5th in league, and
again reach FA, Cup 1st Round, losing 1-2 at home to Blyth Spartans.
They also reached the semi-final of the Lancashire Junior Cup, losing
to Chorley 5-1. Of the pitched the new town stand was open in
September 1958 at cost of £2,000.0.0d. The end of 50's 1959~1960
another nearly season, again the team crashed out of the F.A. Cup in
the first qualifying round to Penrith, 1-0. Another poor run in saw
the hopes of being runner-up dashed and club finished forth.
