In 1937 Ken joined his home town's club Preston North End as an amateur player, turning professional in 1942 and made 31 appearances in the team during the Second World War. He also guested for Kilmarnock in 1946. After the war he continued to play for Preston, 1946-52, making a further 166 appearances before moving to Hull City, 1952-55, where he made 76 appearances for the Tigers. The 1955-56 saw Ken move to Barrow (who were in the League then) where he played in 22 games for them. 1956 Ken joined Morecambe as Player-Manager, making 86 league and 42 cup appearances, scoring 24 league goals and 16 in cup games. Towards the end of his term as Manager he played fewer games. Ken had an unusually long term as Manager, five seasons, when you consider the club won no honours under his management, despite coming close several times. He was sacked by the board in 1961 and went on to manage Horwich R.M.I. from 1963-67.
