The 1990's
1989-90
~ Again lost 0-2 in the final of the Lancashire ATS Trophy, this time
to Colne Dynamoes.
1991-92
~ Finished third in the league for a second successive season, and
reached FA. Cup 1st Round for the first time in 7 years, losing 0-1
to Hull City at home. Defeated champions Stalybridge in the final of
the Presidents Cup. The season also sees the club play its 1,000th
Northern Premier League game.
1992-93
~ John Coleman becomes the first Morecambe player to be selected for
the England semi-professional team.
1993-94
~ Reach the quarterfinals of the FA. Trophy.Defeated Southport 4-3
after extra time to lift the Lancashire ATS Trophy.
1994-95 ~
Jim Harvey steers the club to the runners-up spot, and with it
promotion to the Football Conference. The club lose out in the final
of the ATS Trophy.
1995-96 ~
The club finish ninth in their first season in the Conference, and
win the Lancashire ATS Trophy, defeating the previous season's
conquerors Bamber Bridge in the final.
1996-97 ~
Finish 4th in the Conference, and reach the FA. Cup 1st Round,
losing 0-3 at Boston United. Justin Jackson is sold for a club record
fee of £30,000
1997-98
~ Finish one place lower in the league (but with a record points
total) and again reach the FA. Cup 1 Round, losing in a penalty
shoot-out at Emley. A penalty shoot-out sees them win the Spalding
Cup against Woking. The club runs two teams in the Lancashire League.
Christie Park sees a massive improvement, with the South Stand
undergoing renovation and a new North Stand being built at a cost
£550,000, enabling the ground to be suitable for the Football
League. Attendance's have risen from average of 400 in the early
1990's to 1,537, with 3,940 watching the game against Halifax Town in
October and 2,000 plus attendance's recorded at three other games.
None of the home league games is watched by fewer than 1,000 (the
first time since 1969 this had happened). Brian Healy represents
England against Holland, and is selected for the Middlesex Wanderers
overseas tour.
1998-99 ~
The Lancashire Cup is sole success of the season, with club going
out of both FA competitions early on, and the finish 14th. The New
North Stand is officially opened by Sir Bobby Charlton and
Southampton provide opposition.
1999-2000
~ The club record highest league finish of 3rd. The investment in the
youth programme pays dividends, with several making first team
breakthroughs. The returned Jackson becomes the first Morecambe
player to win the Conference "Golden Boot" with 29 goals
(he is later sold for a new club record fee of £180,000) and
Stewart Drummond plays for England during the season. No cup
successes are gained, although the club again reaches the FA Cup 1st
Round, losing 2-3 at Oxford United (the winner coming in the last minute).
