Morecambe Football Club 1945~ 1946

Two of the men not in football kit include Erie Quick (second from left, with buttonhole) and of course Jack Gorst, far right.

The players, back row, from the left: Joe Warburton (also a fine batsman and wicket keeper), Jack Benson (for many years popular landlord of the Chieftain Hotel), Arthur Carter (also played darts for the George Hotel), next to him the right back, possibly called Waite, then Alan Bowker (brother Eddie played centre-forward for Heysham).

Front row - Ken (Cod) Knowles (leading Morecambe solicitor), Bert Hodgson (plumber), Billy Holmes (centre-forward, later with Blackburn Rovers and Wolves and an amateur international), Jackie Mayor (captain, a builder who took the penalties), Freddie Blondell (inside forward and welder at Nelson Acetate) and George Warburton (Joe's brother) who played for Aston Villa.

Additional information ~ the following team were winners of  the Lancashire Combination Cup beating  Bacap Borough 4-2 on 4th May 1945 : Eric Quick, J Warburton, Benson, Carter, Levett, A Bowker, J Gorst, Knowles, Hodgson, Holmes, Mayor, Blondell, G Warburton.
