Born in Llwchwyr, Wales, a former Welsh international making 54 full appearances, Leighton James was named manager in January 1994. He had signed for Burnley when 17 in 1970 making 200+ appearances for the Clarets. He transferred to Derby County for £140,000 in 1975, where he appeared in over 70 games and later transferred again to Queen Park Rangers for £188,000, playing for them in 40+ games. He then returned to Burnley for £165,000 (a then record fee for the Clarets) and notched up a further 80+ games before being moving to John Toshack's Swansea City for £130,000, where he made over 100 appearances. He transferred from them for free to Sunderland playing in 60+ games before being moving for free to Bury and then later to Newport County and again back to Burnley as Player/Coach, making a further 96 appearances. He moved on to be a coach to Burnley Park Hall, and later to be Bradford City's Youth and Second Team coach.

On leaving them he returned to local football in Burnley before being appointed manager of Gainsborough Trinity in late 1993.

However travelling from East Lancashire to Lincoln proved to be hard and he was appointed manager of Morecambe on the 5th January 1994 along with Jim Harvey who had also impressed the Board as his assistant.

His one success as manager was winning the Lancashire ATS Cup shortly before he was sacked by the board on 7th June 1994.
