Born in Blackpool, as a player he had experience in the League with his teams including his home town club Blackpool, where as a trainee he made 19 appearances before going on to join Portsmouth, Aldershot, Rochdale and Houston Hurricanes in the USA. He joined Morecambe as a player in 1980 making over 140 appearances. He was even Club Captain and his last game was in September 1983. Lawrie was appointed Manager of Morecambe in April 1989 and his most notable claim as manager was to sign probably the club's best forward player for a long time in Ian Cain for the then club record fee of £7,500 from Fleetwood Town. But on a cold November night he walked of the boardroom resigning after loosing 10 out of 12 league games.
