Born in Liverpool, having played for Bolton Wanderers after leaving school. Went on to play in Central League for Southport. Later to move to play for Nantwich, Chorley, Fleetwood and Morecambe (played twice in trials in 1972) and player-manager for Netherfield. He joined Morecambe as Player-Manager in March 1976 when the team was at rock-bottom of the League. He played as defender, playing in 37 League and 18 Cup games and scored a single goal. Johnny went on to save the club from seeking re-election to the Northern Premier League. However the following season success didn't come and he was sacked by the board towards the end of the season 1976-77. He later played for Leyland Motors and Southport.r
