There was much talk among the supporters of the club about who would be the next manager of Morecambe after Joe Wojciechowicz left for Colne Dynamoes. All the talk stopped with the appointment of Eric Whalley during the summer of 1988. A former reserve player for Accrington Stanley in their League days, Eric had vast experience in non-league circles at Great Harwood, Clitheroe and Accrington Stanley (1968). He almost lead Accrington to promotion in the H.F.S. Loans League Division 1. Eric's first job was to rebuild the team after the mass exodus of players with the former manager to Colne Dynamoes but his ideas of building a good Premier League team from lower Division players proved difficult to achieve. After yet another defeat (Mossley) the 10th of the season Eric resigned as manager.
