Page 4 Morecambe entered the Lancashire Amateur Shield without success from 1907-8 and had one game in the Lancashire Junior Cup on 7th October 1911 against Padiliam (at home) in round one, losing 1-2. Two Football League clubs were played in friendlies at Morecambe. On 28 April 1909 Morecambe beat a weak Blackburn Rovers side 1-0, with a goal by Ashton. Then on 18 April 1911 a crowd of 1511 saw Morecambe lose 2-3 to a stronger Bradford City side, with the Morecambe scorers being Livesey and Moss. The visitors were not however the Bradford side that won the FA Cup that season, From 1909-10 the club entered the West Lancashire League for three seasons, remaining members of the North Lancashire League for the first two of those seasons and becoming champions for 1910-11. However, the club struggled in the stronger West Lancashire League. On 18 September they were beaten at home 1-3 by Blackpool Athletic. following that with five straight defeats until a 4-4 draw away at Lytham on 20 November. Stronger players were recruited, probably including semi-professionals and the first win came at home to Leyland on 25 March with a 3-0 score. This 'revival lifted the team to next to bottom (1Ith.). The Richardson Cup semi-final was reached, when the team lost at Fleetwood 0-1 to Banks St. Stephens on 12 March 1910.
The record for the club for 1910-11, when they finished 1Ith. was:- P24 W5 D6 L13 F32 A52 Pts16. After 1911-12 they were bottom with the record of :- P26 W5 D6 L6 F36 A64 Pts16. The club was clearly struggling with little money bringing few successes, leading to great apathy about football in the town and inevitably, the club folded at the end of the 1911-12 season. |
